Inception and Development
The Pedabayalu mission in the Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam was the result of a commitment emerging from strong conviction towards the Claretian missionary option for the poor. Fr. Peter Puthenkandam, after his specialization in Fellowship Programme of Social Management at Ahmedabad, wished to initiate some socio-economic, developmental projects for the non-Christian tribal regions of Andhra Pradesh. The search ended at Peddabayalu, a hill station.

Evangelisation and Education

The Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam gave the Peddabayalu mission to the Claretians on 9 January 1988. The Archdiocese also wanted the missionaries to assist in the evangelical work in the tribal area of the diocese. This Mission was seen as an entry point into the tribal regions of Andhra Pradesh for striving for their integral development. For this, the missionaries began functioning in close collaboration with the Sisters of St Ann (Luzern), who run an English Medium School at Pedabayalu in collaboration with the Integral Tribal Development Agency (ITDA).

Hostel for Tribal Boys
Education of poor tribal boys is the noble task that the mission here undertakes. The area is a tribal belt and the educational opportunities for the tribals here are not very bright. In this context the missionaries run a hostel here for boys and the boys are sent to the school run by the Sisters. Extra-curricular activities organized at the centre help tremendously in the integral development of the students. At present, the hostel caters to over a hundred boys.
