Inception and Development
The Archdiocese of Shillong entrusted the Catholic Mission at Dangar - Balat to the Claretians in 1993 to cater to the needs of the Garo Catholics, who are a majority in the parish. There is a considerable number of Khasis too present here. The pioneer Claretian missionary here was Fr. Pius Thuruthiyil.

Pastoral Ministry
The parish of Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary Church, which was a sub-centre of Mawsynram parish was erected an independent parish by late Archbishop of Shillong, Most Rev. Hubert D’Rosario SDB, on 7 th November 1993 and was entrusted to the Claretian Missionaries. The parish has 8500 Catholic population in 1458 families as per the 2002 census. The population consists of many ethnic groups such as Garos, Khasis, Bengalis, Nepalis and Hajongs, spread over 75 villages and has an area of 120 Sq. kilometers.
In order to deepen the faith of the people many programs like village touring, training camps, retreats for children and youth, marriage preparation courses, training for the village catechists, seminars for elders, retreats for catechists and elders, monthly circle meetings in each circle are undertaken.

Educational Apostolate
Sensing that illiteracy is the root cause of the underdevelopment of the region, the missionaries began Lower Primary Schools in local languages. St Peter’s English Medium High School in the centre has over 800 students.
The VSDB (Visitation Sisters of Don Bosco) Sisters joined the mission in 1994, collaborating with the Claretians. The Sisters manage the girls’ boarding, help in the school and join the pastoral visits. There are 4 village schools managed by the parish. The parish works towards the integral development of the people.
